To provide quality dental care and education to central Ohio children at an affordable cost to their families.

Organization Overview

Impact Statement

2015 ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • We hired our first, paid, part-time executive director with fundraising experience to direct operations.

  • We hired a part-time dental assistant to support clinic operations and strengthen our programs by supporting our clinical volunteers.

  • The Lady Blue Jackets remodeled the clinic creating a more kid-friendly space and a warm family environment. The remodel included adding TVs to the treatment rooms and reception area. This investment totaled more than $30,000.

  • We increased the number of appointments available to our patients and the number of patients served. In all, KidSMILES serves approximately 500 patients.

  • We educated and distributed free dental supplies to more than 6,500 low-income children through our Educational Outreach program. Since the program began in 2011, we have served approximately 30,000 children.

2016 GOALS

  • We will continue to grow our primary fundraiser--the KidSMILES Tailgate.

  • We will increase the number of clinic days per month to better serve our patients. To do this, we will engage more volunteer dentists.

  • We will pursue additional revenue streams and revenue-generating partnerships with other nonprofit organizations.

Background Statement

The KidSMILES Pediatric Dental Clinic was founded in 2008 as a solution to a critical shortage of affordable dental options for low-income families in central Ohio. A nonprofit organization dedicated to providing quality dental care and education to children at an affordable cost to their families, KidSMILES utilizes a unique operating model that relies on volunteer dental professionals to serve patients.

The KidSMILES clinic opened its doors to patients in December 2012 at 770 Bethel Road in Columbus. With more than 500 dental professionals on board to volunteer, KidSMILES provides dental care at a cost of $10 per visit. Services include: dental examinations, radiographs, cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants, cavity removal and restoration and extractions.  We have served more than 500 pediatric patients from the central Ohio community.

In addition to providing care through the KidSMILES clinic, volunteer dentists and hygienists have been conducting educational outreach programs to elementary school and preschool children since February of 2011. Through our partnership with the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation, Stinger joins our volunteers for the elementary school visits to create excitement. To date, approximately 30,000 children have seen our presentations about the importance of good dental hygiene. Each child also receives a free take-away bag that includes a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, Stinger coloring page, and informational material.

Statement from Ms. Norma J. Sexton, Clinical Director

KidSMILES fills an enormous need in the central Ohio community. Many families are working hard to make ends meet but cannot afford critical dental care for their children. Regular, preventive dental care is a healthier and less expensive choice compared to expensive dental emergencies that are often treated in hospital emergency rooms.

The KidSMILES Pediatric Dental Clinic serves children at a cost of only $10 per visit, allowing families to seek preventative and consistent care. In our second year of operations, we plan to treat more than 1,000 children through our unique model of using volunteer dentists, hygienists, dental assistants, and front-office personnel. Additionally, KidSMILES' educational outreach programs for children ages 3-12 help children understand the importance of dental hygiene and gives them the dental supplies to maintain good dental health.

Statement from Dr. James A. Homon , Homon Orthodontics

We are very proud of the accomplishments we have made with KidSMILES, however there is much more work to do. Through our educational outreach program and networking with local service agencies, we have grown KidSMILES patient base considerably. We now have a waiting list of new patients and existing patients that need to be seen for their six-month preventive care appointments. Volunteer dentists for KidSMILES feel that their experience is rewarding and valued by our patient families. We need to broaden our roster of dentists and ask those who have committed to KidSMILES to consider volunteering at least twice a year. We will continue to work diligently to engage more dentists. Our limited budget continues to be a challenge as well. We are ready to move forward with adding an additional staff person and increase the hours of current staff. Continuing to develop strong fundraising plans will help us make the next step.

Programs

Educational Outreach Program

KidSMILES’ educational outreach program makes an impact in the lives of families with few resources and limited access to quality dental care. Past surveys indicate that our program is often one of the few exposures children have to dental education. Our elementary program effectively communicates the importance of good, daily oral heath habits in a fun way. The outreach program is also critical to making families aware of KidSMILES and the services we provide. Goody bags with dental supplies and information about KidSMILES are given to each child. Putting a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and brushing timer in the hands of each child reinforces the information provided at school. Good dental hygiene and preventative care are important components to overall health. Practicing good daily habits can reduce costly emergency room visits and eliminate lost time in school for tooth pain that often is a result of bad oral care.

KidSMILES Pediatric Dental Clinic

The cornerstone of KidSMILES' efforts is the pediatric dental clinic at 770 Bethel Road in Columbus that opened to patients in 2012. The clinic provides comprehensive care, with a main focus on disease removal and prevention.

Services include dental examinations, cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants, cavity removal and restoration, extractions, endodontic treatment, minor periodontal surgery, and management of impacted teeth. We also provide education about proper oral hygiene and the importance of good dental health. Each visit to the clinic costs only $10, which is a result of a low-cost operating model that relys on volunteer dentists, hygienists, assistants, and front-office personnel to staff the clinic.

Statistics from KidSMILES’ first 200 patients:

  • 30% of KidSMILES patients were seeing a dentist for the first time;
  • 66% had not seen a dentist in over one year; and
  • 41% of families earned less than $25,000 per year.

While working to grow our individual donor base, we will work to renew and increase support from current and new corporate and foundation donors. KidSMILES Tailgate fundraising event will increase the number of participants and the dollars generated. Those attending the event will be added to the individual donor and donor prospect lists that are strategically cultivated and solicited to generate new and retained individual donors and increased financial support from individuals.
