Background Statement

Established in 2008, the Gahanna Parks & Recreation Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating Gahanna residents, businesses, and the surrounding community about the importance of parks and recreation services, and to promote programs and facilities essential to making Gahanna a great place to live, work, and play. The Foundation is committed to improving the quality of Gahanna's 51 community parks, mini parks, open space parks, and athletic facilities, as well as the range of shelter rentals, community athletic leagues, summer camps, golf course, and adult and youth recreation services to support a healthier community.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, all donations are tax-deductible. The Foundation is guided by a committee of community volunteers dedicated to protect, nurture, and grow parks and recreation opportunities for the benefit of the 34,000 Gahanna residents. These efforts are implemented by the City of Gahanna Department of Parks & Recreation.

Collaborations

Since the Gahanna Parks & Recreation Foundation seeks to support parks and recreation efforts through out the community, it depends on partners to help reach those goals. The Gahanna area youth sports organizations are able to provide youth scholarships to program participants in need based on the collaboration between the leagues. In addition, the Foundation works with area schools to promote art education and public art efforts.

Gahanna Public Art

The Gahanna Parks & Recreation Foundation celebrates the creative and cultural heritage of Gahanna through public art activities and events. Examples include the Gahanna History Mural that commemorates the historical monuments that shape the history of this community: from the Log House and the Mill House to the Olde Gahanna High School and the Big Walnut Creek Bridge. The mural reflects the personal history of many families, and features settlement stories about the founding of Gahanna, including lesser-known facts about the community such as the Big Walnut Country Club and its ties to Columbus. The mural is art that belongs to the community and its future generations.
