Yay Bikes!

2009

Yay Bikes! seeks to cause personal and community transformation through utilitarian bicycling. Our innovative programs, projects, and partnerships create alternatives to the automobile as a primary form of transportation.

Impact Statement

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • We received 501(c)(3) status from the Internal Revenue Service.

  • We formed a board and began drafting bylaws and articles of incorporation.

GOALS

  • We will secure a $150,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Transportation and The Ohio Department of Public Safety (ODOT/ODPS).

  • We will successfully complete a major cyclist safety campaign for students at The Ohio State University.

  • We will establish a membership program and attract 250 members.

  • We will develop the Yay Bikes! brand and redesign the website to better reflect our organization.

  • We will hire three staff and recruit five people to serve on the board.

Background Statement

Yay Bikes! branched off of another local organization in 2008 to pursue an agenda somewhat different from that of traditional bicycle advocacy organizations. Our primary focus is not policy or engineering solutions, but on causing a grass roots public health, cultural revolution, and behavior-change movement. We are interested in causing people to critically evaluate their mobility options and, if they are choosing to drive for all or most of their short trips, make different choices about personal transportation. If they are among those who have fewer mobility options, we seed to enhance their ability to get around town using bicycles. Our innovative programming utilizes social marketing, technology, and business and social entrepreneurship methodologies. We do what it takes to reach as many people as possible. We strive to get these individuals to consider riding a bicycle for transportation, for their own health and well-being and the health and well-being of our entire community.

Biographical Statement Meredith Joy has extensively researched bicycle mobility and mode shift; she earned her master’s degree in city and regional planning from The Ohio State University in 2009. As a grant and proposal writer, Meredith has earned hundreds of thousands of dollars for local nonprofits in the areas of bicycling safety, healthcare, local food systems, and community development. She launched Yay Bikes! in 2009 to inspire a widespread transformation in the way people experience traveling from point A to point B. Meredith herself has been car-free for several years, a choice she considers both liberating and immensely frustrating.

Creative Intersections with Cycling

We partner with many other organizations including Wild Goose Creative, Summit on 16th United Methodist Church, and Fuse Factory Electronic and Digital Arts Lab Inc. to create experiences that connect bicycling with other areas of life, such as art, technology, and faith. Examples include the Pinchflat Bike Art Poster Show, Velosynth, and Blessings of the Bicycles.

Mobility Solutions for Special Populations

We work to find ways that the bicycle can empower people who have limited mobility options. This year we will be seeking partnerships with residential treatment facilities to set up bike-share stations and cycling education programming for all of their residents.
