-
We produced the Young Writers Short Play Festival, which featured 10 high school playwrights. It was nominated for the Greater Columbus Arts Council Artistic Excellence award.

We focused efforts and maintained the payment schedule of the small loan used for the purchase and renovation of the facility purchased in 2010; the loan will be paid off in 2014.
2012 GOALS

We will continue to raise and allocate funds to pay off our $50,000 building loan.
-
We will develop a plan for creating a paid staff position and allocate money for this endeavor.

We will expand relationships with patrons and better support our community businesses through the creation of productions mixers. We will hold eight events, one taking place at a local business, directly following each performance.
-
MadLab will continue to diversify funding through new foundation and grant applications and identify sponsorship opportunities for corporations and individuals.
Background Statement
MadLab Theatre and Gallery is a nonprofit organization that provides an artistic haven for the creation and experience of original works. It is a laboratory where individuals and ensembles are free to experiment without censor. Each year, the company produces seven to eight full-length original productions including Theatre Roulette, the longest-running annual shorts festival in Columbus. In addition, MadLab serves emerging artists by providing an affordable, quality venue to small arts organizations.
In 2010, MadLab had the honor of being named a finalist for the prestigious LINC MetLife Foundation 2010 Innovative Spaces Award. This national award emphasizes the role affordable artist space projects play in community revitalization and socially progressive community development, and will increase awareness of replicable, sustainable approaches and models. MadLab has also been nominated for the Greater Columbus Arts Council’s Artistic Excellence award on five diffferent occasions. The organization has been called a "Generation-X troupe with ambition and taboo-shattering imagination" (The Columbus Dispatch). MadLab work has been cited for an "amazing display of theatrical creativity" (The Other Paper), and now we are closer to downtown than ever. With our downtown facility located at 227 North Third Street, MadLab has solidified its position as an affordable and accessible venue for the most exciting and daring artists central Ohio has to offer.
Statement from Mrs. Barlup Jennifer, COSI
MadLabTheatre and Gallery provides an artistic haven for the creation and experience of original works. Our performances have repeatedly been cited by The Columbus Dispatch and The Other Paper as outstanding works, and the company has been nominated for the Greater Columbus Arts Council’s Artistic Excellence Award five times. In addition, MadLab was named one of 16 finalists for the LINC Met Life 2010 Innovative Spaces award. Two reports, State of the Arts and Culture in Columbus, OH, a report created for The Columbus Partnership, and State of the Arts Report, created by The Ohio Arts Council, state that one of the most pressing issues for small arts organizations in the central Ohio area is the lack of available and affordable rental spaces. While MadLab is a producing entity, we also work to be an affordable community space available to artists, theatre companies, and small nonprofits that lack a venue.

Programs
Original Works Theatrical Productions
Each year, MadLab works hard to support emerging artists and accepts submissions for both short and full-length productions through its website. This past year, more than 750 full-length plays were submitted through the website. These efforts aid emerging artists in establishing themselves while also providing audiences with the opportunity to experience original works.
MadLab produced Happy9/11! and Other Completely Non-Offensive Tales by Christopher Lockheardt; The 13th Annual Theatre Roulette,a collection of 12 shorts by various authors; and Age of Bees by Tira Palmquist. In 2013, MadLab plans to produce She's Dead by Joe Giordano, The Invisible Play by Alex Dremann, The Air Loom by Jom Azelvandre, and Wall by J. R. Spaulding Jr.
Young Writers Short Play Festival
MadLab provides professional space and exposure for the student’s work ensuring new playwrights are encouraged in their development.
This project solicits original, 10-20-minute scripts from high school students, selects semifinalists, mentors writers to further develop their submissions, and produces the finalists’ scripts in a fully-staged performance.
MadLab believes this outreach to education is a way the organization can give back to the community through education and development of new talent in central Ohio.
The MadLab Gallery is a small gallery with a large respect for artists. We strive to help not only artists who have never shown in a gallery space before, but also those who have already established themselves in the art community. We look for individuals with new ideas who want to share them with others. The gallery has been a part of MadLab since the space was opened in 1999 to integrate the visual arts with the performing arts.
Currently, efforts are being expanded to partner with artists organizations and produce joint shows where possible.
Juried open-call shows are included to provide additional opportunties.
In order to develop playwrights, MadLab created the stage program called "3 in 30." This program's unique framework asks playwrights to develop concepts through to scripts in 30 days. The program provides writers, directors, and actors an opportunity to grow as artists by learning the practical lessons of producing work on stage consistently. In 2012, MadLab plans to produce five "3 in 30" segments.
MadLab's theatrical season is based almost exclusively upon original, unpublished theatrical works. Many productions are written, workshopped, and produced in-house by an ensemble of actors, writers, directors, and technicians. The theatre strives to stretch the boundaries of the accepted presentation theatre in central Ohio. When MadLab started in 1995, we were the only company producing original work, an effort we are proud to say has grown to more than ten companies.

MadLab maintains that a healthy artistic organization is born out of a healthy administrative organization. To this end, MadLab has consistently operated in the black since 2004. In 2010, with the purchase of its new facility, MadLab took out a mortgage, and a $50,000 note to help defray the costs of renovations. This short-term loan is scheduled to be paid off in full by the end of 2014. Currently, the majority of MadLab financial planning efforts are geared towards accomplishing this goal. On a day-to-day basis, MadLab has a very strict structure of checks and balances that are used to budget, approve, and execute necessary expenses. It is this structure that has kept MadLab fiscally conservative, but artistically dynamic throughout its existence. |
