Mission

To provide an intimate learning experience with distinguished musicians inspiring personal and musical growth and to connect our community with the passion and emotion of chamber music.

Impact
2014 Accomplishments
  • CMC launched a new website, unveiled a YouTube channel, and upgraded all program registration to an online process.

  • CMC hosted educational events where our students studied and performed with world-class artists. Students of all levels performed in master classes for Harumi Rhodes; the Lincoln Center Pianists; and the Escher, Pacifica, and Cavani string quartets.

  • CMC groups Quator Alliance and the Cezanne Quartet participated in the St. Paul String Quartet Competition in St Paul, MN and the Bellaserelle Quartet appeared on NPR's From the Top.

  • CMC held 35 concerts, including chamber ensemble and orchestra performances; adult, jazz, and alumni groups; outreach concerts at the Ohio State School for the Blind, and a holiday fundraising concert.

2015 Goals
  • CMC strives to build an advisory board to maintain continuity through organizational growth. An ideal board member has the wisdom of a philanthropist, musician, and professional who will support our mission so CMC will continue to thrive.

  • CMC is working to build its Alumni Association so alumni can reconnect with CMC and current students can connect with alumni.

  • CMC is increasing promotion and marketing. We are searching for an assistant whose efforts are dedicated to advertising our programs.

  • CMC continues to implement new curriculum, iSTEM (improvisation, theory, solfege, eurythmics, and movement). These classes provide 'off the pages' training and inspirational programming for students familiar with music of different genres.

  • CMC has built relationships with local organizations like the Ohio State School for the Blind and the Dowd Education Center at Homeless Families Foundation to provide chamber music performances and mentoring.

Background

Chamber Music Connection (CMC) is dedicated to the study and performance of chamber music and continues to provide students an intimate learning experience with distinguished musicians inspiring personal and musical growth. The organization began as the Delaware Chamber Music Festival (DCMF) in 1992 as a two-week summer program on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University (OWU).

The first annual Spring Weekend Festival with members of the Cavani String Quartet was held in 1993 at OWU. The festival was held at OWU on the weekend after Mother’s Day until 2012, when it was moved to The Ohio State University and held in the first weekend in May. DCMF was incorporated in 1995. In 1998, Jane Cataldi, an arts administrator and mother of a DCMF student, was hired as the first administrative director and was instrumental in advancing the organization. The name was changed to reflect the program’s growth from a festival to a year-long program. Jane secured a home for CMC at St. John's Episcopal Church in Worthington, and St. John’s has hosted our general programs and special events since the fall of 1998.

CMC’s inaugural trip to the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition followed in the spring of 1999, when one of our quartets was accepted into the competition as a quarterfinalist. Since that time, CMC ensembles have participated in the Fischoff, Midwest Young Artists Discover, the St. Paul String Quartet, and the Ohio String Teachers’ Association competitions. When our opus quartet won the Fischoff Junior Division Silver Medal, they became the first CMC group to be featured on National Public Radio’s From the Top. Several of our featured students and alumni have received Jack Kent Cooke scholarships.

CMC experienced gradual growth over its 20-year history from a starting size of a dozen students to the present-day dynamo of 26 ensembles, seven chamber orchestras, an adult program, gig program, fellowship program, iSTEM, and jazz/improvisation workshop.

Statement from Ms. Deborah Price, Founder and Artistic Director

Marking 25 years of chamber music education, promotion, and performance gives us the opportunity to reflect on the myriad ways that CMC has contributed to our community and culture, in addition to the ways that our community have impacted us. We have watched hundreds of our students mature into successful musicians, lawyers, doctors, engineers, business leaders, teachers, parents, and community members. We have received local and national recognition on NPR's From the Top shows, participated and placed in national chamber music competitions, performed in national music association conferences, and attended nationally acclaimed conservatories and universities.

Senior Staff
Ms. Stephanie Price, Assistant Artistic Director

Stephanie has been associated with The Chamber Music Connection (CMC) for two decades. A professional violist and dedicated chamber musician, over the years, Stephanie played many different roles in CMC, from starting as a student, becoming a fellow, and eventually being appointed assistant artistic director as an alumna. Stephanie developed as an individual player, excelled in communication and leadership in the Fellowship program, and has a keen interest in art and education program administration. The detail in playing and communicating effectively in a string quartet coincides with the same type of brainstorming, problem solving, and communication skills it takes to be successful in any field. Stephanie serves CMC in a way few others could, and is an inspiration to program participants, art coaches, fellow staff members, and volunteers alike.

Programs

Summer Festival Week

CMC's Summer Festival Week includes small ensemble coaching sessions and individual instrument classes. Five levels of chamber orchestra reading and performing classes are offered and students participate in a variety of master classes and workshops with guest artists. More advanced students have the option  to participate in the honors program, held the week before the festival. Evenings of Chamber Music are also held for adult students.

Jazz and Improv Workshop

This unique program includes group jam sessions, musicianship skills class, and combo sessions. The workshop is open to intermediate through advanced musicians who play melody instruments (strings, woodwinds, and brass), piano, percussion, bass, or guitar. Participants explore improvisation through traditional and new American and South American repertoire while learning rhythmic and improvisational techniques.

Conservatory Concert Series

The Conservatory Concerts involve advanced CMC students, alumni, faculty, and guests in collective combination performances. Each year, four concerts are planned. They include collaborations with Chamber Music Columbus artists, as well as presentations of local and national American composers.

Spring Weekend Festival

The Cavani String Quartet from Cleveland Institute of Music has been the guest artist at the Spring Weekend Festival for 20 years!  In addition to holding master classes and coaching student groups, Cavani also performs a concert presented by CMC, giving students an excellent opportunity to hear a professional performance and learn more about chamber music.

Fall and Winter Chamber Music Semesters

Fall and winter semesters are 9-week programs of chamber music education for music students of all ages and abilities. Programs are primarily geared towards the study of string chamber music repertoire, but they also include the collaboration of strings with winds and piano. Depending on their prior experience in chamber music and their age and skill level, students are assigned to a small ensemble and a chamber orchestra. Students will study with professional faculty coaching teams and guest artists in a masterclass or workshop. They have multiple performance opportunities during the semester.
