Background

Three Scale Research is a nonprofit organization that seeks to educate individuals about geography, health, history, and ecology through the production of interactive video and audio maps. We produce highly engaging interactive maps utilizing video, image galleries, and audio. Founded in 2009 by a small team of geographers, we received 501(c)(3) nonprofit tax-exempt status in 2011. Since then, we have worked on contracted projects and grants with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, The Ohio State University, the John and Christine McChesney Foundation, the Sandusky County Economic Development Corporation, and the Ohio Enviornmental Protection Agency. Unlike traditional static maps that are used for navigation purposes, the interactive quality of our maps engages users with discovery and unexpected learning content. We promote our educational maps as freely available to the general public through the Internet and digital embedding. To date, we have made thousands of maps and posted over 60 map stories on a variety of topics.

Statement from Dr. Ron McChesney Ph.D., Founder

As a Columbus-based nonprofit, we have the opportunity to create important interactive resources for our local community, the state of Ohio and the United States. Our vision is to create, promote, and maintain a series of hundreds of educational custom interactive maps that collectively comprise a national education resource constructed efficiently and at low cost when compared with almost any other project done at the national scale.

Ohio Wetlands Interactive Map

Three Scale Research developed a free teaching tool for fifth and sixth grade educators. Complete with lesson plans, the Ohio Wetlands Interactive Map is free accessible to Ohio educators and the general public. This engaging map was created to build learning and appreciation of Ohio's wetland resources and is fully aligned with Ohio's state curriculum standards for students in grades 5-6.

Ohio Underground Railroad Interactive Map

Three Scale Research desires to share the untold story of the underground railroad in Ohio. We successfully launched a project to fund the Ripley Ohio Underground Railroad Interactive Map through the popular crowdfunding platform, Kickstarter. The map is freely accessible to museums, educators, geneaolgists, and the general public. The map tells the story of Ohio's unsung heroes who engaged in illegal acts of civil disobedience through their participation in underground activities to help free slaves.

Comments
Dr. Ron McChesney Ph.D.

During FY09-11, we provided map-based research for The Ohio State University and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In FY11, we produced a series of park maps, and in FY12, our LLC developed a multi-platform interactive mapping product that we used to make an interactive map of the Ohio Underground Railroad and an interactive education map for Ohio Wetlands. These projects were funded by a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign and the Ohio Enviornmental Protection Agency, but still resulted in a FY11-12 loss. For FY13, we have applied for grants from private foundations to fund a comprehensive set of interactive education maps in the areas of wetlands, community healthcare, and history.
